The discussion from Thursday focused on Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno. Though I had to exit the classroom early, I was able to leave with quite a few interesting takeaways. One of my favorite quotes we discussed was from Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno, "to be entertained means to be in agreement" (64). As a class, we wrestled with this quote for some time. At one point or another, all of us have come across something that was entertaining, yet disagreeable. The conclusion we came to was interpreting “to be entertained” as “to not be critical”. The passive consumption of media is essentially agreement with it. I was very pleased with our group for working through it. Another Horkheimer and Adorno quote I enjoyed discussing was “culture today is infecting everything with sameness" (53). Our current culture is very homogenous. Individuals try to find their own sense of style within the box we have placed ourselves in. A great example of this is Rollins College fashion. The culture at Rollins has created a very recognizable style among the student body.
